On Wednesday morning, the NFL side of the Chicago Bears continued their training camp and pre-season matches ahead of the new NFL season. The Bears returned to training camp after this past Saturday’s confident 33-6 home win against the Buffalo Bills. After training camp media spoke with Special Teams Coach Richard High, Defensive Lineman Austin Booker, and Wide Receiver Velus Jones Jr on their respective opinions on the season, Caleb Williams, and other topics as the teams look to perfect and prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
Coach High Speaks on his Admiration for Cornerback Josh Blackwell
Coach High initially spoke to the media on the first question about what he sees that jumps out to him on the cornerback Josh Blackwell.
“The first thing I see with Blackwell is that he’s fearless and he’s a very smart, cerebral player and he wants to do everything right, so we’re just trying to give him the opportunity to get along with other guys to see what we have and to see if we need to go that route.”
Coach High Speaks on Caleb Williams and his Mentality with the Team
Coach High also spoke to the media on the second question about how Caleb William’s doing and what he feels he needs to improve ahead of the Bengals game and the new season just around the corner.
“He’ll tell you that there’s been some really good and there’s been some things he really wants to work on. We do feel that Scales is treading in the right direction, so we’re happy with his rehab and everything that he’s doing. Cam is getting an opportunity and what I told Cam is that he needs to take full advantage of the opportunity because it’s not just us watching his tape, there’s 31 other teams watching his tape, and you got to bust your tail so you can put the best product on the field, so we’re gonna help him do that and we’re gonna help him improve.”
Coach High Speaks on the Positives of Team Joint Practices
Coach High last spoke to the media about what he’s learned from maximizing joint practices.
“I learned that in both coaches, whatever that is, the offense coordinator, defense coordinator, going against each other, especially the coordinator, or the head coach, and it usually starts at the top. When those two have a vision, and it’s organized, which Zach and Bruce do, it’s so organized, it’s one of the most organized, leading into what I feel is the most comfortable and when it’s organized that way, then you can get the best out of it, because you know it’s being coached the same way on both sides. So, that’s what I find. Even when guys, you’re coaching against another guy, and the guy’s trying to have an arterial motive, or, you know, players are
pushing and stuff. When they did it, then you don’t get what you’re supposed to get out of it. But, I’m excited for this one.”
Booker Speaks to his Comparison to Las Vegas Raiders, Defensive end Maxx Crosby
Booker also spoke to the media commenting on the question around his comparisons to Maxx Rosby and what it means to hear his name associated with Maxx.
“I mean, he’s a great player. I talked to him a bunch, when I went to the retreat in Vegas. It’s great because he’s a great player, he works his ass off, so it’s just great to be able to be a part of something like that. But at the same time, I’m my own player, I have my own field, and hopefully I can make my own legacy just like him.”
What’s Next?
Special Teams Coach Richard High, Defensive Lineman Austin Booker, and Wide Receiver Velus Jones Jr and company at the Chicago Bears will now look towards preparation for their penultimate game of preseason against the Cincinnati Bengals at home at Soldier Field on Saturday, August 17 at 12 p.m. central.
