Canelo Alvarez a recognized Mexican boxer enters the ring once again after his most recent fight where he beat Junior Middleweight King Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo last year on Saturday, September 30, in Las Vegas by a unanimous decision. Alvarez returns in a day that celebrates not only his but also his opponent’s culture and country’s history. On the weekend of the celebrated Mexican celebration of Cinco De Mayo; Saturday, May 4th, Alvarez enters the ring once again in a much-anticipated fight, but a fight with something special and different, a fight that he will bout against his countryman, unbeaten, all-action former world champion Jaime Munguía for Alvarez’s undisputed Super Middleweight World Title via PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video on Saturday, May 4 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
What brings something special and different to Saturday’s bout, is the difference in experience between both boxers as well as the celebration around the weekend the fight will take place.
Canelo Alvarez, a boxer with vast experience and impact
Alvarez is a very well-known Mexican boxer from Guadalajara who has vast experience in the sport with a full trophy case from multiple world championships in light middleweight and heavyweight as well as maintaining undisputed championships in super middleweight holding titles with the World Boxing Association (Super version), World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization titles since 2021[1].
Álvarez isn’t only a successful boxer with wealth and championships, but also one who’s proud of his Mexican roots and has an impact on the Mexican community in general in terms of inspiration and charitable work.
Canelo Alvarez has carried his Mexican roots with pride in the ring; with his victories being celebrated not just from him, but from the entire nation. Canelo has actively helped the Mexican underprivileged communities with education, healthcare, and youth development which has left a mark on various lives.
Alvarez comes to the Munguía bout with confidence after beating Junior Middleweight King Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo last year on Saturday, September 30, in Las Vegas by a unanimous decision.
Munguía, young and not as experienced, but unbeaten and hungry
Canelo is well-known, experienced, and an inspiration; but, Munguía brings something different to the fight. Munguía barely started his career in 2013, so he only has 10 almost 11 years of experience under his belt nothing compared to Alvarez’s, but his record and boxing are a force to be reckoned with and should have Alvarez not feeling as confident.
The also fellow Mexican boxer hailing from Baja California, Tijuana is currently maintaining a remarkable record of 43-0, with a crazy statistic of 34 wins coming by knockout.
Munguía comes into this bout with a lot of confidence as his previous fight against Brit John Ryder in a super middleweight bout, on the 27th of January 2024, in the Footprint Center, in Phoenix, Arizona was won by TKO in the ninth round.
Fight held during globally recognized Mexican celebration brings something different
Apart from Munguía’s youth and inexperience but making up for it in victories making the fight different, the bout being held on Mexico’s celebrated event of Cinco De Mayo makes the fight that much more special.
Both Munguía and Alvarez were born and raised in Mexico, so this fight being an all-Mexican affair as well as being fought at Las Vegas arguably one of the most Mexican-populated cities, and on top of that fighting during Cinco De Mayo makes the fight an incredible night of passion, but also pride for the Mexican people.
Canelo commented in the interview with TVS Sports on the confidence Munguía brings to this bout.
“He’s strong, throws a lot of punches, and he has a winning mind. That’s why I feel so proud about this fight, You need two fighters with the same mentality to have a great fight. And I think this is the perfect fight to do it.”
Canelo also commented on the passion and euphoria he feels on fighting on such an occasion as Cinco De Mayo and what this event will give to the Mexican people on a weekend filled with celebration.
“It’s all about Mexico. The fans are going to be the biggest winners on May 4th, big party for Mexico.”
