Phillies Route Yankees, Sweep Two-Game Set

The New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies wrapped up a quick two-game weekend series at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday afternoon. Saturday’s game saw the Yankees make a late comeback to tie the ballgame, but the comeback fell short in extra innings. The Yankees were looking to leave Philadelphia with a split on Sunday, while the Phillies were looking for a quick sweep.

Phillies Offense Stays Hot

The Phillies carried their offensive momentum from Saturday’s game into Sunday afternoon. The team seven runs on twelve hits. Sunday’s game saw multi-hit performances from four different players. They got off to a hot start when J.T. Realmuto put the Phillies on the board early with an RBI single in the first. A double from Odubel Herrera and a single from Jean Segura extended their lead to four in the bottom of the second. In the fifth inning, it was Realmuto again with another RBI single. Two batters later, Andrew McCutchen lined a double to left field to put Philadelphia up seven to nothing.

Nola Held the Yankees in Check

Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola held the surging Yankees offense down on Sunday afternoon. He pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball, giving up just three hits and striking out nine. This was a big game for Nola and a performance that he can certainly build off moving forward.

Yankees Bats went Quiet

The New York Yankees offense seemingly turned a corner during the series in Minnesota earlier in the week. Even in their loss on Saturday, the Yankees offense drove in seven runs. On Sunday, the Yankees just did not have an answer for Aaron Nola and the Phillies. The team managed just four hits, two of which came off the bat of DJ LeMahieu. Other than the top of the order, the Yankees offense remained hitless.

Coming up Next

Up next the Phillies head to Los Angeles to begin a series with the World Series Champion Dodgers. They will send Spencer Howard to the hill to face off against the Dodgers and Tony Gonsolin. The Yankees have an off day on Monday but will stay on the road for a three-game set against the Blue Jays beginning Tuesday night.
