
The Detroit Pistons G League affiliate, cruised their way to victory in the season opener over the Grand Rapids Gold.
Jared Rhoden — representing as a two-way player, lit up the court, delivering an outstanding performance, logging in a total of 36 points. 26 of those points came from a very impressive first half. He made 16 of 28 field goals, including a noteworthy 4-8 from the three.
In addition to his scoring, Rhoden also had 8 rebounds, along with 2 assists – serving as the focal point of the game and played a crucial role in securing the Cruise’s first win of the season.
Game Recap
Motor City Cruise went on a scoring spree and found their rhythm. From that point on, they never looked back. The moment was electrifying when Buddy Boeheim nailed a spectacular buzzer beater three that closed the first quarter.
Collectively, their efforts were nothing short of remarkable, as they finished the opening quarter with a six point advantage at a 29-23 score, setting the tone for the second quarter.
The Cruise capitalized on second-chance opportunities and kept their offense sharp. Zavier Simpson — also known as “Captain Hook,” wasted no time in showing why he carries that moniker. His exceptional display included a skillful hook shot through contact, earning him a trip to the free throw line that further bolstered the Cruise’s 12-point lead just before intermission, reflected in a 60-48 score.
In the second half, the Cruise maintained their high energy level, seamlessly continuing their dominance from the previous game periods.
The Grand Rapids Gold, determined to stage a comeback, faced challenges in containing the relentless offensive pressure from the Cruise during the third and fourth quarters. The Gold had some bright spots, though, and that was through Hunter Tyson — who led all their scorers with 24 points.
Despite Tyson’s standout efforts, the key obstacle remained in obtaining offensive support, and they were unable to narrow their deficit. As the final buzzer sounded, the game concluded with a win for Motor City Cruise, 112-99.
Jontay Porter and Zavier Simpson added substantial firepower to the Cruise’s overall performance, each with 18 huge points. Porter also dominated the glass with 14 rebounds and that gave the Cruise the edge.
Tosan Evbuomwan also etched his name into the double-double category, concluding the season opener with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Malcolm Cazalon and Buddy Boeheim also
added to the scoreboard 11 points a piece. This showcased a well-rounded team effort and the Cruise won the battle on both ends of the floor.
Head coach Jamelle McMillan has ample reasons for early-season satisfaction as the team commences on an impressive note. Looking ahead, the team is gearing up for their first home game of the season, which will take place on Tuesday, November 14th at Wayne State Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
