MEAC and SWAC Weekly Football Honors for Week 2

Week 2 of HBCU college football was one for the ages. We got to witness a lot of rivalry games along with some impressive performances from the players. And let’s not forget the annual Southern Heritage Classic game that took place between Pine Bluff and Tennessee State. The MEAC and SWAC conferences announced their weekly football honors for the top performers in Week 2’s football games.

Bounce back win in the Battle of the Bay

Norfolk State QB Otto Kuhns was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Week after he finished with 15/20 completions, 199 passing yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in a bounce-back win against arch-rivals Hampton University. He also rushed four times for 15 yards.

Morgan State has two players honored

Defensive back Jordan Toles was named Defensive Player of the Week while punter Shane Messenger was named Freshman of the Week.

Toles collected two key interceptions against the Akron Zips. He also recorded five tackles, two solo, a part of the Bears’ defense that garnered a shutout in the third quarter.

Messenger averaged 35.2 yards on six punts, including one downed inside the 20 yard-line. He recorded a game-high 46-yard kick.

NCCU continues to dominate

This is the second week that a player from NCCU has received an accolade by the conference. Punter Juan Velarde was named Specialist of the Week. He averaged 43.8 yards per boot,

placing four punts inside the 20-yard line, including two at the 3-yard line in the victory against their arch-rivals North Carolina A&T State.

Howard bounces back in dominating fashion.

After being upset by the Eastern Michigan Eagles, Howard won their home opener against Morehouse with the final score 65-17. This was in large part due to Offensive Linemen of the Week Da-Metrius Weatherspoon recording three blocks without giving up any sacks or penalties. He also graded out 91% of his blocking assignments as he aided Howard to 613 yards of total offense.

SWAC honors two players from Alabama A&M

Running back Ryan Morrow was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing 18 times tallying a total of 191 rushing yards to go along with three touchdowns in the home opener win against Lane.

Wide Receiver Terrell Gardner was named Specialist of the Week after returning three punts for 95 total yards against Lane on Saturday. He also contributed a long return of 69 yards which resulted in a touchdown that gave Alabama A&M a 51-13 lead, and that would end up as the final score.

FAMU puts on a defensive clinic.

Linebacker Isaiah Major was named Defensive Player of the Week after finishing with 11 tackles and two sacks. He and the team’s defense held their opponent to less than 350 yards

Johness Davis received two accolades this week after his impressive debut.

Golden Lions Football

UAPB freshman running back Johness Davis was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week. He was also named FCS National Freshman of the Week. He received these accolades after having a big performance in the Southern Heritage Classic game against Tennessee State. He had 24 carries, ran for 167 yards and one touchdown. He is currently leading the conference in rushing yards and will look to continue that trend in their next game against Miles College, which will be their first home game of the season.
