Dewitt Takes Home Their First State Championship as they Defeat Defending State Champs, River Rouge

For the first time ever in Dewitt high school history, their football team took home a state championship title. With a 40-30 victory over River Rouge, they lifted their first-ever D3 trophy (for football) at Ford Field.

River Rouge was going to be a hard match from the beginning and was looking to be back-to-back champions and take home another state win. This game really came down to which quarterback was more accurate in terms of rushing and passing. Senior Mareyohn Hrabowski was River Rouge’s quarterback and led his team to a successful win last year. He accounted for 321 yards, which completed a total of 4 touchdowns for his team.

Unfortunately, for River Rouge, they didn’t come out with the same desire and heart that DeWitt did. Anyone that followed DeWitt knew that this wasn’t their first time coming to the championship game, and they had something to prove. Quarterback Tyler Holtz ended the night with 295 yards and made way for 5 complete touchdowns for the group. Holtz was also named the AP Player of the Year for D3 high school football.

Other top-notch players for DeWitt were Andrew Debri and Tommy McIntosh. Debra gained 63 rushing yards and also caught a touchdown pass. McIntosh played outstanding as well and ended the night with 74 receiving yards and a pass to earn his team a touchdown.

Rouge fought hard despite a tough loss, and they, too, had some key players that kept them in the game. David Martin obtained 95 yards, and Nicholas Marsh came in with 85.

After 5 long previous years of coming to the state championship game, DeWitt finally got their time in the spotlight. They finished being undefeated the whole season and will look to come back for their 7th trip to Ford Field next year.

What is next

Hrabowski was a senior for River Rouge and is continuing his stride outside of high school. He will be attending Western Michigan University to continue his athletic and academic career.

Holtz is a junior and will be returning to DeWitt in an attempt to make another appearance next year and try to take his team to be back-to-back champions.
