Nathan McCahill completed 4 passes and 12 total attempts, but no touchdowns were produced this time, McCahill needed support from other players to make a difference in the tough game against Denison on a cold Saturday afternoon as the Tigers (5-0) fought, and beat the Big Red (3-2) 17-6.
The Tigers entered Saturday’s contest unbeaten. After multiple home and road games concluding with wins, The Tiger entered this match-up with a winning streak of five games out of five so far this season. However, this time, the Tigers showed toughness and determination to win against the Big Reds and continue that streak with six wins out of six.
The Big Reds entered the game looking to bounce back to winning ways. The Big Red have looked good in home and away wins against Oberlin and Hiram 70-0 and 55-24 respectively. However, the Big Red barely lost to Wittenberg 27-24 in overtime, so they looked to use that fire from the loss entering their away game against the Tigers.
Denison Head Coach Jack Hatem’s squad lost barely, by a small margin, in the highly contested affair 17-13 last season they were hoping to get that last sprint and touchdown to win this time around, but in the end, DePauw once again were able to sweat through the tough moments and win.
Tigers couldn’t find the points and struggled offensively in the first half.
This game was not easy for the Tiger’s offense in the first quarter; the Big Red defense didn’t let them breathe at all. The Tigers initially got points on the board with a good kick early in the game by kicker Joseph Sullivan from 24 yards out for 3-0. DePauw’s offense really showed when running back Gus Baumgartner rushed 1 yard for an easy touchdown for 9-0. Later, Sullivan again made himself stand out with a good kick for 10-0.
The second quarter, however, didn’t produce anything offensively for the Tigers or Denison, as both teams played a great defensive game, with neither side producing a touchdown or point of any sort.
Tigers turned it around and dominated the second half
The Tiger’s offense and defense undoubtedly turned around the difficulties from the first half in producing rushes and touchdowns and put on a convincing performance.
The third quarter began with running back Caden Whitehead rushing 3 yards for a touchdown and a 16-0 score, with this time kicker Matthew Berry providing a good kick for a 17-0 score on the board.
The fourth quarter then provided the only offensive prowess for the Big Red in the game with quarterback Jimmy Stines’s complete pass to wide receiver Josh Aiello, who rushed 5 yards for a touchdown and a 17-6 score.
What’s Next?
The Tigers will look to continue their unbeaten run when they play away from home against Wooster (2-2) on Saturday, October 14th.
The Big Red will look to bounce back after this loss and return to winning when they play at home against Wabash College (3-1) on Saturday, October 14th.
