Cleveland Cavaliers win the 2K24 Summer League Championship

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Houston Rockets 99-78 to win the team’s first ever Summer League title. The Cavaliers were led by Isaiah Mobley, who finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Emoni Bates and Sam Merrill would also chip in to help lead the Cavaliers to the win, finishing with 19 points and 27 points, respectively.  Both teams came into the championship game with a 5-0 record. The first quarter was all about the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 28 points on 65% percent shooting from the field and 44% shooting from 3. They also put on a defensive clinic, contesting almost all of the Rockets’ shot attempts and keeping them out of the paint. The second quarter showed the Rockets coming to life, as they outscored the Cavs by seven points. Part of that was due to a 14-2 run, cutting the lead to just 3 points. Despite the Rockets finding their three point stride, the Cavaliers maintained the lead, ending the quarter on a 10-6 run. While it looked like going into the second half both teams would go back and forth, the Cleveland Cavaliers took off again and never looked back. Mobley would end up being named the NBA 2K Summer League Finals MVP.

The Steal of the Draft

The NBA announced earlier today that Houston Rockets rookie Cam Whitmore is the 2023 Summer League MVP. He helped lead the team to a 5-0 record and clinch their spot in the 2023 Summer League championship game. In each of the five games, Whitmore averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 3.0 steals.

Cam Whitmore was taken by the Rockets as the 20th overall pick, which came as a bit of a surprise for most people as he was projected to be a lottery pick. During his only season at Villanova, he averaged 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. Questions about his health caused many teams to pass on him, but that has not phased Whitmore one bit. In fact, he uses that as motivation to show the world how well he can play. So far, he has proven a lot of people wrong and is setting himself up to be a key player in the Rocket’s rebuild for the upcoming season. Though the Rockets were not able to get the championship win, Whitmore has already proven that he is NBA ready. He will be joined alongside Amen Thompson, another promising rookie also taken by the Rockets as the fourth overall pick.

2K24 All-Summer League Teams

Not only was Cam Whitmore named the MVP, but he was also named to the All-Summer League First Team. The other players are Utah Jazz rookie Keyontae George, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Sam Merill, Denver Nuggets rookie Hunter Tyson, and Miami Heat center Orlando Robinson.

The players named to the All-Summer League Second Team are Los Angeles Lakers guard Max Christie, Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr, Los Angeles Clippers guard Xavier Moon, Chicago Bulls guard Javon Freeman-Liberty, Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Emoni Bates, and Brooklyn Nets rookie Jalen Wilson. Unlike the first team which only consists of five players, the second team has six players due to a tie in votes between Christie and Moon.
